Maw Tin Soon, The Place Where Sea and Bay Meet

Maw Tin Soon Pagoda Festival is a distinct destination in Myanmar because it is not only buddhist religion destination but also beach destination. Because of paying homage to ancient pagoda, offering food to dragon according legend and swimming and playing on the beach, Maw Tin Soon Pagoda festivals destination is the best destination.

Maw Tin Soon is the place where the Andaman Sea and the bay of bangel meet, is located at the edge of south western part of myanmr. Maw Tin Soon means Maw Tin point, is also known as Pagoda Point and Cape Negaris. It is famous because of geographical position between maritime boundary of sea and bay and beautiful scenic spot. And also famous for Myanmar Buddhists, a visit to Pagoda which built on Maw Tin Point is a holy pilgrimage.

Myanmar Buddhists respectively called Myat Maw Tin Soon Pagoda is a very ancient pagoda, history is connected with Shwe Dagon Pagoda from Yangon. Myanmar Buddhists believe that these two pagodas built at the same time, 2600 years ago and Buddhism is first believed to have been introduced to the country by the two trade brothers . Pagoda festival always held from full moon day of Tabodwe to full moon day of Tabaung according to Burmese calander and crowded with many foreigners and travelers from all over the country.

There is a small pagoda which with rounded platform ( Also called raft resting pagoda) on the extended reef in the sea boundry, which is fausely remark with Myat Maw Tin Pagoda and 300 yards from the base line is the best attraction place for wide sea view and bay very closely. And breathing in fresh air is the best experiences for visitors for recreation. The way to that small pagoda is covered by sea during high tide.

The distinct place to visit is Hai Gyi Island near Maw Tin Soon, also known as Negaris Island. Before 2014, there is only boat way to the island but now, you can visit both by car for 20 min or boat for 1 hr. The island is founded as a Hai Gyi Kyun Town in 1989 and naval regional command headquarters is based on it. In 17th century maritime era, the island is an excellent harbour to launch Andaman Sea and the bay of bangel and also secure during strong monsoon. So, Hai Gyi Island has long interesting history between Myanmar and western country. A breif history is as follow-

1. Madras government establishes small settlement on Haigyi in 1687.

2. Colonial English occupied again and made a trade station. in 1751.

3. Alaungpaya, founder of the third Burmese Empire ceded the island from British in 1757 and continuely gave permission to operate trade station.

4. Because of British intervention in Myanmar affairs, King Alaungpaya repelled all setteller in 1759.

5. British occupied again the island after first Anglo Bermese war in 1824.

There is another two places near Maw Tin Soon that travelers should not miss is Ngwe Taung Beach and Htate Soon ( Purian Point – opposite site of Hai Gyi Island). Ngwe Taung beach is good place for swimming on large flat sea bed with strong wave but save because of current direction towards the beach. Htate Soon is a point of interest for unusal shape of numerous big lime stone and photo spot. It is a popular scenic shot in Myanmar famous film, “Ami Myay Ma Thar Kaung Mya”

How To Get There?

There is daily direct bus from yangon to Maw Tin Soon. Kan Htoo Aung, Myat Mi Khin and Universal buses daily depart from Yangon at 0730pm and 0800 and arrive at next morning 0600 and 0700. Buses return back to yangon in the evening. There is another direct buses from Pathein to Maw Tin Soon, Myat Zin Yaw and Myo Ma which depart at 1130 am and arrive at 0500 pm. Which buses return back to Pathein in the next morning 0500. Apart from bus, there is a river boat which daily run 3 times from Pathein to Maw Tin Soon, 10am,06pm and 0800pm and return back to pathein at 10 am, 0500 pm and 0700 pm. It is needed to take ferry car and motor cycle from Kha Mauk Maw Jetty to Maw tin Soon for 20 Minute.

Private small car is also feasible to travel from Pathein to Maw Tin Soon and Haigyi. Although the road condition is good, there is many turning points and steep slobes along the road. 95 miles distance and 4 hr drive with 40 km/hr. Stop points along the way to Maw Tin Soon which I recommended are Man Dat or Talat Khwar and Nga Yote Kaung and there will be a good scenes of Mountain.

Accomodation

There is many hotels and Resorts (Guest house level) near pagoda and on the beach. Maw Tin Hotel, Silence Resort (Guest House ) ၊ Papawady Resort (Guest House), padaytha, Htet, San Yate Nyein , Gamonpwint, Shwe Pin Lae beach guest house with Aircom Room, Fan Room and Economic Room are recommended to be chosen. Brand new Papawady Resort on the opposive side hill with clear pagoda view, 4 min walk to pagoda, is owned by me and grand opening was on 1st February. All rooms are attached with bathrooms and toilets and with Aircom and fan.
